The FA’s Girls’ Football in Schools programme is a nationwide initiative aiming to give every girl equal access to football in schools, using creative resources, partnerships, and tailored programmes to inspire participation and leadership.

🌟 Overview

  • Launched in partnership with Barclays and the Youth Sport Trust, the programme is designed to transform girls’ access to football in both PE lessons and extra-curricular settings.
  • Since 2019, it has already empowered 3.8 million girls to play football in schools, proving that football is for everyone and helping girls see themselves as leaders and equals.

🎯 Key Goals

  • Equal access by 2028:
    • 90% of schools to offer girls equal access to football in PE.
    • 90% of schools to provide equal opportunities in extra-curricular football.

  Create a cultural shift where girls feel football belongs to them, not just boys.

📚 Programmes & Resources

  • Disney Inspired Shooting Stars: Engages girls aged 5–11 through storytelling and creative play, building physical literacy and enjoyment of activity.
  • Barclays Game On: Targets secondary schools, using football to develop life skills, confidence, and leadership. Includes pathways like GO Coach and GO Referee.
  • Lessons from the Lionesses: Free classroom resources inspired by England’s women’s team success, teaching values like resilience and teamwork.
  • Breaking Barriers Guides: Practical support for schools to include Muslim girls and other underrepresented groups.

🏫 Delivery & Support

  • Driven by Barclays Girls’ Football School Partnerships, a network of over 300 local partnerships led by education experts.
  • Schools can access free CPD, digital resources, and training to embed football into their curriculum.
  • The Youth Sport Trust provides day-to-day coaching and support, ensuring programmes are tailored to local needs.
